It happens to the best of us. But why exactly does it seem like your body is punishing you for giving it a healthy dose of exercise? Here are four possible reasons why your recovery is moving at a glacial pace.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>You Used Up Your Brain Power<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You probably already know that a tough workout or race depletes the energy stored in your muscles (called glycogen). But did you know that it can also wipe out your brain chemicals?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeurochemicals like norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine are all released to keep you motivated and focused, and send signals to your muscles throughout a race or intense workout,\u201d says Craig Weller, Exercise Specialist for Precision Nutrition. \u201cWhile your muscles usually restore glycogen within 24 hours, it can take days for your brain to restock the chemicals it used up.\u201d Since stress hormones like norepinephrine help get your heart pumping and prep your muscles for work, your body might feel like dead weight when you\u2019re running low, he explains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search\/protein-fitness\/N-8e9?search=BPI%20sport%20best%20bcaa\" target=\"_blank\">Recover Better With These Post-Workout Products<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the fix? \u201cEating lots of antioxidants supports your brain as you restock these chemicals, but the only true fix is time,\u201d Weller adds.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>You Tried A New Workout<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We\u2019ve all been there: You run a few miles for the first time in years or spontaneously decide to test out a trendy exercise class, then wake up the next day feeling like you got mowed over by a T-Rex. \u201cWhen you do a workout that your body isn\u2019t adapted to, you\u2019re more likely to feel sore afterward,\u201d says Weller. \u201cThe stress of exercise can cause \u2018microtraumas,\u2019 or \u2018micro tears,\u2019 in the muscle tissue which we think explains that aching sensation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t let the word \u2018microtraumas\u2019 freak you out too much. The pain\u2014called delayed-onset muscle soreness\u2014is usually harmless.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re just as sore after the second, third, and fourth time you do that workout, <em>then<\/em> you might have a problem. \u201cConsistent soreness indicates you\u2019re not adapting to the stress a workout puts on your body,\u201d says Weller. \u201cYou may need to reevaluate the workouts you do and the attention you give to recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>You Haven\u2019t Been Sleeping Well<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you follow up an intense gym session with a late-night Netflix binge, you might slow recovery and prolong soreness. \u201cYou have to really treat sleep as a skill,\u201d says Weller. When you\u2019re snoozing, your nervous system shifts into parasympathetic mode, or \u2018recovery\u2019 mode. This is when your stress hormone levels drop, and your body repairs, he says.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/repaying-your-sleep-debt\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard Health Publications<\/a><\/em>, the average adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep per night. So prioritize sleep just as much as you prioritize exercise or a healthy diet, and hit the hay, stat.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>You Told Yourself The Workout Was Torture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Behold the power of your brain: Tell yourself a workout is killing you and you might actually feel more exhausted after.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour perception of an activity has a huge impact on how your body feels after,\u201d Weller says. \u201cThere are lots of theories about soreness, but they indicate that your brain and nervous system are as involved as your muscles.\u201d The <a href=\"http:\/\/c34193.sgvps.net\/~mauricez\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gatchel-Biopsychosocial20Approach20to20Chronic20Pain-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">biopsychosocial pain model<\/a>, for example, suggests that we feel pain based on a combination of psychological, biological, and social factors, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>If you push yourself through a bootcamp workout thinking \u2018no pain, no gain\u2019 or spend all day feeling nervous before CrossFit, your brain reacts differently than it would to your excitement about activities you love, like surfing or skiing, explains Weller.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term you may want to consider swapping out some of those dreaded runs for a swim or dance class, but for now, you can always try the fake it \u2018til you make it approach.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever find yourself struggling to get in and out of your office chair days after a workout?
