(Moringa salad, anyone?)<\/p>\n<p>Moringa\u2019s leaves contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-cp99j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protein<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-a\/N-cp99hz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin\u00a0A<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-c\/N-cp99i1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin\u00a0C<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-b\/N-cp99i0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B vitamins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/calcium\/N-cp99i5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calcium<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/minerals\/N-cp99i4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">copper<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/iron\/N-cp99i7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iron<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/potassium\/N-cp99i8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potassium<\/a>. So it\u2019s no wonder this impressive plant is popping up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/superfoods\/N-cp99kt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">superfood<\/a> powders, nutritional supplements, recipes, and even face creams.<\/p>\n<p>One of moringa\u2019s biggest claims to fame? It\u2019s jam-packed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">antioxidants<\/a>. A number of compounds in the plant help eliminate excess free radicals (damaging particles from exposure to pollution, stress, and more) and fight oxidative stress, protecting cells throughout the body. \u201cMany of the phytochemicals found in plants have antioxidant properties and can benefit immune and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/goal-heart-health\/N-cp98xr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cardiovascular health<\/a>,\u201d says Brian Tanzer, M.S., manager of scientific affairs for The Vitamin Shoppe.<\/p>\n<p>One study published in the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/c34193.sgvps.net\/~mauricez\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/13197_2012_Article_859.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Food Science and Technology<\/a> <\/em>found that markers of oxidative stress decreased in postmenopausal women supplementing with seven grams of moringa leaf powder a day for three months. (Women\u2019s estrogen\u2014which has antioxidant properties\u2014declines during menopause, leaving them with a reduced ability to fend off free radicals.) Take <em>that<\/em>, biological clock.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that moringa supplementation improved the women\u2019s fasting blood sugar levels. Other research suggests that certain compounds in moringa help trigger the body\u2019s release of insulin (the hormone that helps your body use sugar), according to a review published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/c34193.sgvps.net\/~mauricez\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/article_29959_144683da90d0087df5c7b5ec76da5b57.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The antioxidants in moringa also get to work when applied topically, potentially helping you hang on to that youthful glow. And a study published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/c34193.sgvps.net\/~mauricez\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/PDIA-31-22351.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advances in Dermatology and Allergology<\/a><\/em> found that a face cream containing moringa leaf extract improved skin texture and signs of aging when used twice daily for three months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/07\/natural-anti-aging-skincare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15 Natural Ways To Hang On To That Youthful Glow<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Try This Supergreen On For Size<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you want to add this green to your daily grub, you\u2019re most likely to find it in powder, capsule, or juice form. (We wouldn\u2019t be surprised if it shows up in salad greens mixes at some point, though.) With a flavor similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=matcha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">matcha<\/a>, moringa is perhaps most popular in powdered form, as an add-in for smoothies or green drinks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost all of the supplements out there are coming from the leaves of the <em>Moringa oleifera <\/em>species,\u201d says Tanzer. And since people are looking for moringa supplements to reap its overall nutritional benefits\u2014not for one specific, isolated compound\u2014supplement servings are usually measured in grams instead of milligrams. (The more moringa, the more nutrients.)<\/p>\n<p>Since moringa is a plant food source, it\u2019s generally safe for pretty much anyone to consume in moderation, with one exception: \u201cSince moringa also contains vitamin K, like most greens do, anyone on blood thinners should be careful and limit their consumption,\u201d says Tanzer.
