This KAL product provides three well-known, trusted ingredients in one strong joint support formula. KAL Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM is formulated to help with normal joint comfort. I am looking for vegetarian Glucosamine/Chondroitin 1500mg/1200mg (KAL) which shall I choose? Most they include shellfish

Best Answer: Unfortunately (for both the source animals and human vegetarians), chondroitin appears to be exclusively sourced from animal tissue. Wikipedia has a very thorough article on it and says this about the sources:

"Most chondroitin appears to be made from extracts of cartilaginous cow and pig tissues (cow trachea and pig ear and nose), but other sources such as shark, fish, and bird cartilage are also used."

As for glucosamine, again it appears to be primarily sourced from animals, according to the Wikipedia article on it, "It is produced commercially by the hydrolysis of crustacean exoskeletons or, less commonly by fermentation of a grain such as corn or wheat." I don't know where you can find glucosamine that is certified vegetarian (sourced from grain fermentation) though.

Finally, MSM (MethylSulfonylMethane) is apparently present in "some primative plants" according to, again, the Wikipedia article on it. However it's used as a source of dietary sulfer and that can be obtained through food, "There is no Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) or Daily Value established for sulfur and sufficient dietary sources are readily available in onions, garlic and cruciferous vegetables and in protein-containing foods, including nuts, seeds, milk and eggs (whites and yolks)."
