VITAMIN SHOPPE HISTORY
1977
The first Vitamin Shoppe store opens at 57th Street in New York City. Born into a world looking for alternatives to over-the-counter and prescription drugs, The Vitamin Shoppe fulfilled a need that no other retailer was handling by offering the best supplements, vitamins, and minerals at competitive prices.
1981
The Vitamin Shoppe ships its very first mail order catalog to customers. This catalog is the nation's most inclusive of its kind, listing several thousand products.
1986
The first Vitamin Shoppe Brand products become available. Since then, our customers have purchased more than 30 million products that bear our name, a testament to the quality and value of the products.
1989
Our Health Awards loyalty program is launched, earning customers credits towards free merchandise with every purchase. To date, we have given our customers over $100,000,000 in free merchandise credits.
1998
Recognizing the incredible potential of the Internet, The Vitamin Shopped launches the proprietary website - www.vitaminshoppe.com. With 42 retail locations, the website was a perfect extension to the listings in the catalog and a great compliment to the stores.
1999
The Vitamin Shoppe opens its 60th store in Boston. Expansion due to a capital investment from J.P. Morgan partners and FdG Associates allowed the Vitamin Shoppe to move into new markets including, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, and Fairfax, VA.
2002
The Vitamin Shoppe opens its 100th store in Poughkeepsie, NY. Reaching the 100 store milestone also brought expanded Midwest and West Coast stores, allowing residents of California, Illinois, and Indiana to visit a Vitamin Shoppe store for the first time. The Healthnotes informational database is expanded to in-store kiosks and online at Vitaminshoppe.com.
2004
The Vitamin Shoppe hires our 2000th associate and opens the 200th store, located in San Jose, CA.
2007
A new website, www.BodyTech.com, is launched to provide a dedicated shopping experience to sports nutrition customers. A complementary site to the original VitaminShoppe.com, BodyTech.com features highly specialized dietary and related products essential to achieving peak health and performance for athletes. The Vitamin Shoppe opens its 341st store in Richmond, VA.
2008
The Vitamin Shoppe continues to grow, opening stores in new states such as Minnesota, New Mexico, and five stores in Hawaii.
