    About this product

    What is Omega-3 Fish Oil?

    • Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are important nutrients for the body. Omega-3’s are needed for various body functions, such as cell membrane health and integrity. Omega- 3 fats include essential ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Omega-3 fats help to support heart, brain and eye health. Cold water fish, such as tuna and salmon, are the best natural sources, but most people don’t consume enough of these foods. They can also be found in plant-based foods such as flax seed and walnuts.

    • EPA and DHA are found in high concentrations in the brain and retina, therefore being critical nutrients for brain and eye health, as well as supporting healthy cognitive function.

Comments about the Vitamin Shoppe Omega-3 Fish Oil 1100 MG - 180 Softgels:

Take fish oil every day for my heart and other conditions. Have an allergy to soy and discovered the Barlean's I was taking had soy. Love it that many Vitamin Shoppe products do not have soy. This fish oil does not either. Read reviews saying no fishy aftertaste & was excited to find it because I have a "sensitive" stomach (too many NSAIDS). However, for me, the fishy aftertaste is horrible/awful/disgusting/ disruptive! I burp fishy taste and get indigestion for hours (nothing helps). Have tried taking with food, without food (before I knew I would have this fishy aftertaste), with chocolate milk (usually "masks" most pills for me) and at night. Does not matter, still fishy aftertaste and burping fishy taste, even during the night. Gag!! Giving 2 stars because really like the "No Soy". Great new labeling by the Vitamin Shoppe too! Would recommend to a friend with the caution: if he/she has history of gastritis, ulcers, takes a lot of NSAIDS, etc. then may want to look for something else.

Comments about the Vitamin Shoppe Omega-3 Fish Oil 1100 MG - 180 Softgels:

It is true that the recent literature states that there is no proven benefit of taking Omega 3 supplements w.r.t. cardiovascular disease BUT it also has an anti-inflammatory effect which is very important as we ( medical research) learn that many disease states are brought on by chronic inflammation.I can certainly attest to the fact that my arthritic symptoms have improved considerably with the taking of Omega 3 fish oil.I used to take fish oil in the liquid form but prefer the gel capsule. No "fishy" taste.

Comments about the Vitamin Shoppe Omega-3 Fish Oil 1100 MG - 180 Softgels:

I take this product daily. I chose it because it is affordable and it comes close to the recommended 2:1 ratio for Epa:Dha. I like it because I don't get fish oil burps after taking it.

Is this fish oil in triglyceride form or ethyl ester form?
A Vitamin Shoppe customer on Feb 15, 2015
Best Answer: Manufactured EE concentrates can be converted back to the natural TG form using enzymes in a process called glycerolysis. Food-grade enzymes separate the ethanol molecule from the fatty acid, creating a FFA and a free ethanol molecule. When glycerol is added back into the solution the enzymes then re-esterify the fatty acids back onto a glycerol backbone creating TG oil. These oils are commonly referred to as re-esterfied (or reformed) triglycerides (rTG), which have identical structures to natural TG but with higher concentrations of the desired fatty acids, EPA and DHA.
The process of converting EE back to TG is a costly step and is therefore bypassed by many fish oil manufacturers. In fact, the vast majority of fish oil concentrate softgels sold globally, including those sold in North America, are EE concentrates. Only a small percentage of fish oil concentrate softgels on the market are TG oils. Whereas fish oil softgels are commonly found in EE form, the majority of liquid fish oil products sold in North America are in TG form. Liquid EE products are not widely used because they degrade faster and are therefore characterised by a more intense fishy flavour thus making them unpalatable for consumers.

Is this Omega-3 still molecularly filtered? The older packaging indicated this but there is no indication that this is since the product went to the new labelling.

And to help other people, on the back label it states: "Does not contain: Yeast, Corn, Wheat, Gluten, Sugar, Salt, Soy, Starch, Dairy, Citrus, Artificial Colors or Flavors."
