ShippingFree ShippingPick-UpWhat is a carrier oil?
In massage and aromatherapy, relaxing and aromatic essential oils play a big part in the calming experience. While beneficial for relaxation, essential oils can be volatile, and sometimes even irritating to the skin due to their concentrated nature. For this reason, a carrier oil is used to dilute the essential oil to make it safer and easier to apply to the skin.
Carrier oils are vegetable oils with popular varieties including almond, avocado, grapeseed, and jojoba oils. They range in color and source, but the best quality carrier oils are produced via cold pressing or cold expeller pressing. For the best results, select a carrier oil with little or no aroma, so the scent of your essential oils can really shine.
How to mix oils with carrier oils
Mixing your essentials oils with carrier oil is simple. Start with one ounce of carrier oil, and add six drops of your essential oil. Stir to mix for a dilution ratio of approximately one percent. While you may add more drops to make a stronger blend, it’s always best to start light.
You can also use carrier oils to create your own infused oils by selecting a base oil and adding your favorite botanicals to soak for a period of time. Store your infusions in an airtight container, away from light, while they do their magic.
Can coconut oil be used as a carrier oil?
Yes! The key is to choose a coconut oil that remains liquid at room temperature, as opposed to solid. Fractionated coconut oil is a liquid version of this popular and versatile oil and is great for mixing.
Shop The Vitamin Shoppe for your favorite carrier oils and essential oils to mix up relaxing and reinvigorating blends for aromatherapy and massage.
