Psyllium is a soluble fiber derived from the seed husks of the Plantago ovata plant, otherwise known as ispaghula. Commonly used as a gentle bulk-forming laxative, psyllium supports healthy digestion and regularity.

To keep things running smoothly, take one The Vitamin Shoppe® brand Psyllium Husks capsule up to two times per day with a tall glass of water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bulk-forming laxative?

Instead of being digested, bulk-forming laxatives absorb liquid and swell in the intestines to form soft and bulky stool that stimulates your bowels.

Directions

Take one (1) capsule up to twice daily with at least 8 oz. of water per capsule.

Effectiveness and price

How many grams of fiber are in a recommended serving?

Best Answer:  What is important is the total amount of fiber you consume per day. A minimum of 25 grams per day is recommended by Heart Associations while wholistic Doctors believe it should be in the low 30 grams.
So the amount you need of this supplement, where a capsule is almost a gram, depends on how much food based fiber you are consuming. So, if you have a prepackaged meal, for example, it will tell you how many grams of fiber. Normally you will see fiber content is very low. A slice of even vegetarian pizza will have only 1 gram of fiber
Personally if I'm eating a sandwich with bread, pasta, other carb rich foods, I will take an additional half dozen or so of these capsules to help balance the high carb, low fiber food content. Normally I take a few several times throughout the day. Fiber supplementation is one of the most important supplements we can take. Hope this helps Richard.

How big is this capsule? I read that it's small but it would be nice if there was an actual size included in the documentation.
Does this product curb your apetite?

Best Answer:  Yes, I should have mentioned that.

The recommended dosage is way too low for someone like me with my digestive problems.

And it depends on the rest of your diet.

American Heart Association recommends a daily fiber intake of 35 grams of fiber. If the rest of your diet is low in fiber--if you don't eat fruits and vegetables--then you might need to take a couple dozen of these psyllium capsules to compensate.

It used to have probiotics as one of the ingredients but I dont see it now in the label, does it still have that as of 2018?

Best Answer:  You're right. They used to have acidophilus as an ingredient but no more. Not sure why.
Also I think one should refrigerate if it were in.

My bottle has expired. Is it still ok to use it?

Best Answer:  I do not know about the lifetime of this supplement specifically.

But I do know that in general, those expiration dates are way overly conservative. A medication can still be safe and potent, many months after it has officially expired. See, for example:

http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml

I would imagine that psyllium--being inert fiber--should be at least as resistant to aging as some delicate prescription medication. Provided, of course, that you had stored it as per the directions on the package.

How many of the PSYLLIUM HUSKS capsules do I take a day?

Best Answer:  I started with two—one in the morning and one in the evening. After a few years, I went to two in the morning and two in the evening.

How big are the capsules as compared to a Tylenol capsule?

Best Answer:  It's about 1/3 longer and 2/3 bigger in depth but it is a gel capsule and not a tablet

What are the ingredients? Didn't see it anywhere.

Best Answer:  The label says:
"Psyllium (Plantago ovata) husk 840mg per capsule
Other ingredients: Gelatin (capsule), rice flour, magnesium stearate, Lactobacillus acidpophilus"

How much lactobacillus acidophilus does this product contain per serving?

Best Answer:  The new bottle does not specify how much acidophilus, but the bottles, which I have ordered in previous years, with the same item number, stated 10% on the bottle. I did contact The Vitamin Shoppe about this same issue when I got the new bottles and they couldn't tell me except that items were receiving new packaging.

I like to know if this caps are vegetable made or plastic?

Best Answer:  I Can't be positive. But I'd say they are gel caps, not plastic. It says 'other ingredients: gelatin and water ' which I assume is what the caps are made of.
