Discussion: Niacin (Vitamin B-3) is a necessary part of the body's pathway for making energy. The body converts niacin into NAD through its complex biochemistry in order to generate ATP, an energy form that the body can use.

I forgot about the flushing sensation!
The first day I took this supplement, I had forgot about the flushing sensation. 3 hours later I thought my ears and butt were in fire. Fortunately I had coffee to counteract the side effect. I probably won’t be taking this again. :(

Just what the Doctor ordered
When instructed by my endocrinologist (for diabetes) to take the "flushing" kind of Niacin twice a day, I went in search of that product. It seems that all the big stores only stock "non-flushing" Niacin. I finally found the Solaray 500mg at an area health food store 40 miles from where I live. It does a major flushing which is the best thing for the circulatory problems caused by the disease. It's almost uncomfortably warm and stinging, but I've learned to like that, knowing then that the medicine is doing what the Doctor wanted and what I needed. Alas, I could have been ordering them from the Vitamin Shoppe all along, instead having to make the 80 mile round trip!

Good for High Cholesterol.

Is this form of niacin immediate release or extended release?

Best Answer:  This is immediate release,I have been taking 1000 mg per day to help raise my HDL and have been very pleased with the results. If you have not been taking niacin before you will have to start at a lower dosage, perhaps 100-200 mg per day and build up over a 2-3 month duration. You will experience some flushing but this will pass adjust your dosage accordingly until you get to a comfortable level.Do not use the "extended release" or "no flush type" if you wish to improve your HDL they are useless for this purpose in my opinion.
I am not a doctor but this is what has worked for me.

Is Solaray Niacin 500mg crystalline niacin? How do I lessen the flushing?

Best Answer:  To lessen the flushing take a baby aspirin appx 15-30 minutes before taking. Also, I always took mine prior to going to sleep and was usually out before any flushing :)

Is this product crystalline niacin?

Best Answer:  This question could be considered three questions:

1. Yes, this Niacin can be considered crystalline, but the term crystalline is vague at best, and does not seem to be a well-defined term. The real question is: does this Niacin cause flushing, and the answer seems to be YES.

2. Reducing flushing: some of the other answers do a very good job of describing the benefits of the flush. The doctors that have encouraged me to use Niacin have been in agreement that one should start out with small dosage (50 to 100 mg) and allow your body to acclimate to the flush. As you can tolerate it, increase the dosage. My wife can handle only 100 mg at a time. I am up to 1,000 mg twice a day, which is the target my doctor set for me.

3. The term "crystalline" does not appear on any of the labels of Niacin that I have purchased over the last 15 years. What I look for on the label is a warning or caution that it "may cause flushing". What I DON'T want to see is "time release". Most times you will see one of these, but sometimes neither is present, and you have to guess. I usually won't buy a product where the contents are not clearly presented.

If the product is really Niacin, the label should state that it contains nicotinic acid.

Products labelled as "no-flush" niacin generally contain no nicotinic acid. The main component in these products is inositol hexanicotinate.

Is it non-gmo?

Best Answer:  Thank you for your inquiry. Regrettably, these details are not listed on the item. We recommend contacting the manufacturer directly for these specifics since this is a third party item not manufactured by The Vitamin Shoppe.
