About This Product

DESCRIPTION: A completely natural primary Brewer's Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) that provides a source of amino acids, B-complex vitamins and minerals.

SOURCE: Most Brewer's Yeasts are derived from the fermentation of beer: Such fermentation involves using grain (rice, wheat, etc.) malt, active yeast and the dried flowers of hops. The addition of hops to the fermentation gives a characteristic flavor to beer but imparts a bitter taste to the dried Brewer's Yeast obtained as a byproduct. Although efforts are made to debitter the yeast prior to final drying operations, most Brewer's Yeast are, nevertheless, left with a bitter odor.

Solgar's Brewer's Yeast is produced from beet molasses under carefully controlled conditions. After fermentation, the yeast is collected and dried, using special techniques to preserve its protein, vitamin and mineral content.

Great Nutrient and Amino Powerhouse
I like the taste so I'll just eat a couple spoonfuls out of the can when I have it - I've never mixed it with anything so I can't give much on how that is. I mainly like it in the morning - usually when I don't have much of an appetite, but I want to get some protein in me to start the day. Great mix of nutrients, especially if your looking to supplement your Bs. Also great way to make sure your getting enough Folic acid. And fiber.

Anyway, try it .

Good for breastfeeding
I mix 1/2 tablespoon in half a glass of orange Juice morning and night. The orange juice masks the taste long enough to chug it down. I have been doing it a week and have noticed an increase in my milk supply.

Good product
Use this as a source of B vitamins and amino acids. Can't say I like the taste on it's own but with the addition of a little V8 or tomaoto juice and a bit of fresh lemon juice the taste is OK.

Best brewers yeast powder I've used
I mix this into everything from peanut butter sandwiches, to soups, salads, scrambled eggs, etc. Has a slightly nutty taste by itself but is virtually tasteless when mixed. It is an excellent low cal source of B vitamins, protein and amino acids.

Great on Popcorn
Great on Popcorn.....gives it a great flavor and is WAY better for you than salt. It's especially good for a popcorn lover who isn't supposed to be on salt for health reasons. (truth is....that should include all of us....nothing more salty than theater popcorn).

Flea preventative
I don't know what people use this for, but I put it on my cats' food and it prevents fleas. It's a lot cheaper than flea medications and my cats love it.

Why does the label say: contains wheat? The front says gluten free. And after reading the process for producing nutritional yeast I can't find any way for wheat to get introduced. Does it have wheat? and if so, Why?

Best Answer:  I would double check with the manufacturer, if I had a wheat or gluten intolerance. This way you can be sure that the Brewer's Yeast is not contaminated by malt or grain. I was okay with it. I am somewhat tolerant of wheat though. Corn is what I am completely intolerant of. The label is a bit ambiguous.

How do you know that this Brewer's yeast has the natural occurring whole food form of folate? On the label it says 'folic acid'. I have MTHFR and cannot tollerate folic acid so need to be sure before ordering. Thanks!

Best Answer:  Yes, that is an inconsistency. I read the front of the label which said UN fortified. This is supposed to mean folate, not folic. When the can arrived and I saw Folic Acid in the list on the back, it was dishearting. I decided that perhaps the label writer was uninformed. If, in fact the product is Un fortified. It is either a label problem or an ingredient problem. I cannot tell which. So the answer to your "how do you know" question is... I don't.

Why did they discontinue brewers super yeast plus ?????
Does anyone know the color of this brewer's yeast? I am looking for the medium/dark brown variety of brewer's yeast. Thank you.

Best Answer:  Hi Tim...this product is a lighter brown color. It is similar in color to a cashew nut. Lewis Labs makes a brewers yeast which is a bit darker. Hope this helps...Rob

How much iron? It has two different numbers, 3% and 31%. The numbers on the bottom say serving size, is that a mistake and it's actually total in package?

Best Answer:  I need to know how many cups a 14oz can of solgar's brewer's yeast has. I did the calculation but it doesn't seem right...1.75cups? It looks like there is more. I am trying to avoid pouring it out and measuring it.

Does this brand look and taste like the Lewis Labs' Brewer's Yeast? I LOVED that brand and have tried some other brands that were not even close to Lewis Labs.

Best Answer:  This brand does look like Lewis Lab's product & taste is about the same altho, frankly,
that is not an issue or deciding factor in my choice. None of these products are great
tasting to me. I select them solely for their health benefits of which there are many. I simply
stir them in water & gulp it down as quickly as possible.

Does anyone here use Brewer's Yeast for acne?

Best Answer:  I use it. I've used it for breastfeeding in my oatmeal cookies and I did notice a improvement in my complexion as well

I can't find brewers yeast anywhere. It used to be regularly stocked in almost every health-food store around. Now I can't even order brewer's yeast. Does anyone know the explanation for the sudden disappearance of brewer's yeast? Does this mark the beginning of armageddon?

Best Answer:  Brewer's yeast is traditionally the byproduct of the brewing process. Now days, the stuff we buy in a can is not a byproduct, it is primary grown, and called nutritional yeast. I supposed the name change also has some bit of political correctness as well.

Is this Brewers Yeast wheat free?
