Actually, Xylitol is tolerated quite well..as a dental professional I often recommend my patients consume 6mg/day(gums, mint & mouthwash) in order to fight decay. ..I have not been told that any of my patients have had a problem.
That being said, I use xylitol nasal rinse everyday and if I have a sinus problem, I Neti pot with Saline & xylitol; 6xs a day. I have never had a digestive issue in the 10 years I have been doing this.

  I’ve used this for a number of years now - twice to three times per day - and never experienced digestive issues. That said, you might start by trying it just once per day. I suspect that the amount ingested via the nasal spray is significantly less than if used (for example) as an artificial sweetener on food. I like this product very much, particularly during dry winter months.

  I am a consumer and the following is based on my personal experience. You can swallow the nasal spray since a little bit will come down your nasal passages. I have personally not experienced any GI side effects after using Xlear, but again I have not experienced any side effects after consuming food with xylitol.

  My husband does not have sleep apnea but he uses X-Clear nightly and swears it helps his breathing passages stay more open and moistened. Since X-Clear's active ingredient is Xylitol, which is a sweetner but also has anti-bacterial effect (has been used in some Asian countries for medicinal purposes for a long time) the X-clear could be helping a bacterial issue but he doesn't have that...it does effectively moisten the mucus membranes and of course can be helpful to address bacteria related issues. I use it occasionally when I think I am getting a virus, have nasal dryness, or have allergies and we both like it very much. I guess it would depend on the cause of your husband's sleep apnea - if he has obstructed airways he will probably also need a CPAC machine but X-clear might be good adjunctively. Good you are doing a sleep study. Note* Xylitol is VERY poisonous to dogs so be careful Fido doesn't get hold of the bottle because it is sweet and tasty!

  I have been using Xlear for years and have not noticed any digestive problems. The solution is not swallowed so the little that might get into the digestive tract is minimal. Xlear really helps keep my sinus problems to a minimum.
