Iodine, which is present in iodized salt, seafood, eggs, dairy, and some breads, is used by the thyroid gland to help regulate metabolism and development, especially in babies and young kids. Kelp has been said to also be a good source for iodine.

In the past the use of iodized salt and eating the above mentioned foods has been sufficient in providing the necessary iodine for most people. However I, like many people, have switched to using natural sea salt and I am also a vegetarian. I do eat some fish, eggs and dairy but not on a daily basis. Because of this I use kelp to supplement my intake of iodine.

  Kelp helps in a couple of ways. The first is to supply iodine in an easily useable form to assist the thyroid. Secondly, it supports the liver in detoxifying. There are elements in kelp that bind to and eliminate heavy metals from the body.
One can safely take up to 2-500 mg capsules three times daily. It may cause some jitteriness in some people. If this happens, decrease the dosage to your comfort level. It might also help to take it earlier in the day if it interferes with sleep.

The kelp in and of itself is not harmful but your body may be reacting this way because of other factors. You will have to determine if the benefits outweigh the symptoms.

  I just opened a capsule. Other than a little salty tasting there's no burning even then. I'd stop taking it if I were you. Something's not right.

  Hi, I have been using this product for years in the management of a sluggish thyroid. It has been very helpful. If i miss several days in a row, I notice my symptoms returning, like cold feet, hair loss and general fatigue. I take 1 to 2 per day.

  My wife and I avoid drugs. We get our advice from a Certified Nutritionist who prescribes supplements that are available from Healthcare professionals and some available through stores. I suggest you consult a Healthcare professional who recommends natural treatments.

  I have noticed no difference in how my hair looked or felt. I've been taking this product for at least 3-4 months now and see no affect whatsoever. Nor did it help me to loose weight at all. I started taking kelp to boost my metabolism which I believe is slow. Again, so no improvement in that area.

  I did not purchase kelp to help with weight loss, so I really can't answer this question.
