Green Foods

What are green food supplements and powders?

Green foods supplement formulas harness the power of green foods, usually from one or more of the following green sources: fruits, vegetables, grasses, and algae. The ingredients are then condensed and refined into a variety of popular formats. These formulas typically feature nutrient-dense foods containing beneficial phytonutrients, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Some greens and vegetable powder supplements showcase a single ingredient source, while green food blends combine multiple superfoods into one convenient product.

Which ingredients are commonly found in greens supplements?

Greens supplements often feature a variety of super-healthy green ingredients, such as wheat grass, barley, herbs, veggies, legumes, spirulina, alfalfa, and more. You’ll find these and other common ingredients in many of the green blends and superfood powders we carry. Learn more about some of the most popular ingredients in greens products below.

Chlorella and Chlorophyll

Chlorella is a type of algae and is a source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Because it contains phytonutrients, chlorella is often used to support antioxidant enzyme activity.

When chlorella is exposed to sunlight, the chlorophyll in its cells drives photosynthesis, using light energy to produce oxygen and energy-rich compounds. The vibrant green color of chlorella comes directly from this high chlorophyll content. Thanks to this nourishing plant pigment, chlorella may hold potential health benefits related to digestion and immune support, toxin elimination, and more.

Moringa

Originating from India, moringa is extracted from the leaves of Moringa oleifera and has a refreshing watercress taste. The leaves of the moringa plant contain nutrients such as protein, beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, and calcium as well as antioxidants and polyphenols to provide antioxidant support.

Wheatgrass

Derived from sprouted wheat berries and a staple of many juice bars, wheatgrass contains an abundance of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, plant-based proteins, antioxidants, amino acids, and phytonutrients. Conventionally, wheatgrass has been used to support the immune system, promote a healthy gut, and support detoxification pathways in the liver.

Spirulina

A powerful antioxidant, spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that grows in salt and fresh water and originates from Africa and South America. Spirulina is a great source of multiple minerals and phytonutrients, such as iron, copper, magnesium, niacin, essential fatty acids, selenium, and carotenoids. The algae is customarily used to support healthy cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart health.
