Whey Protein

What is whey protein?

Proteins are the body's primary building blocks, and milk contains two proteins: casein and whey. Whey is the liquid byproduct of cheese-making, often seen as the clear layer on top of yogurt. Once filtered and dried, whey becomes a versatile powder perfect for shakes, smoothies, and recipes. This complete protein is made up of all nine essential amino acids to encourage immune system health, as well as minerals and lactose.

Whey protein concentrate vs. whey protein isolate

Understanding the differences between these two types of whey protein powder can help you choose the right one for your needs.

Whey Protein Concentrate is the least processed type of whey protein, and the concentrates usually have approximately 80% protein content and greater fat, lactose, and cholesterol levels than whey isolates. It may be suited for those seeking a balanced formula with natural nutrients like BCAA’s and glutamine to support muscle health.

Whey Protein Isolate contains higher concentrations of whey proteins at around 90%. It goes through a special micro-filtration process that separates the protein from lactose, fat, and cholesterol, resulting in a higher and purer protein content. With lower lactose and less fat and carbs, it may suit those with sensitive stomachs or more strict diets.

Why choose whey protein?

Whey protein is one of the most easily digestible forms of protein and is packed with powerful antioxidants and amino acids. While whey protein is a favorite among athletes because it can boost pre-workouts and post-workouts, it also offers an array of potential health and wellness benefits:

• Supports lean muscle growth and repair
• Can boost energy, performance, and post-workout recovery
• Helps curb cravings and promote fullness to support healthy weight management
• May balance blood sugar when taken before meals
• Encourages immune system health
• Promotes enzyme and tissue function

What to look for in whey protein supplements

The way that whey protein powder is processed is important. When shopping for a whey supplement, consider:

• Protein-to-carb ratiobased on your fitness goals
• Sweetener type(natural vs. artificial)
• Dietary needs: lactose-free, gluten-free, vegetarian, non-GMO, organic whey protein powders
• Processing method (cold-processed, micro-filtered, etc.)

Always check the label for clean ingredients and minimal fillers.

Is whey protein safe for daily use?

Most people can consume whey protein daily as part of a balanced diet. Please consult your health care practitioner to decide what’s right for you and your goals.

What’s the best time to take whey protein?

Take it within 30 minutes after a workout or as a meal supplement to maximize potential results. It can also be taken between meals or before bed, depending on your goals.
