  Because it's a very small quantity of potassium. A better source might be dried apricots.

  It takes a considerable amount of potassium to hit 100% of requirements. Only a small percentage should be supplements. Try starting your day with yogurt, banana, and reduced sugar OJ. In the afternoon, go with reduced sodium V8.

hello, lost my med insurance so now I cannot afford my doctors prescriptions. One is : "pot citrate er tabs 100's made by usher-smith. I take it to prevent uric acid kidney stones. My question is can I take these, over the counter drugs instead ? Obviously the cheaper cost is a major factor.also, 100's is written on my last prescrip bottle. I thought amounts were always mg ? whats the equvlnt to this "100s" written on my prescrip bottle ? thank you, matthew

  First of all, I am NOT a health care provider so any advice I give should be taken with a--I was going to say "grain of salt," but if you're trying to manage kidney stones, you must know to watch your salt intake!The "100s" on your prescription for the Upsher-Smith product confuses me as I can't find that reference anywhere.But I can't recommend two sites with excellent advice for self-care given a history of uric acid kidney stones--the National Institutes of Health and WebMD.It appears the 99mg potassium citrate from the Vitamin Shoppe taken three times a day may be the equivalent of what you were taking.

  Hello Matthew,Over-the-counter potassium citrate should be OK as long as you stay with a reputable brand name.The mg amount on most of the potassium citrate brands I have seen list the mg amount as "99." Close enough I think. Try to find your daily balance of salts: sodium, magnesium and potassium for optimal effect.I hope this information helps you.Leroy Tirebiter

  Hi Matthew: This should be comparable, if not exactly the same as, your prescription. When a doctor prescribes supplements, I've found that the OTC variety work just as well; however, you'll want to ensure that you purchase those supplements from a reputable place such as the Vitamin Shoppe. (I'd be wary of purchasing them from "just anywhere".) You should be fine.

  I think usher smith is just getting fancy and trying to make you keep taking their 100mg's so they leave the mg out; but have no idea. Anyway this is top shelf quality potassium citrate which I take and 100 mg's is the standard vitamin size across the board...if that helps?

  I was taking it because I didn't think I was getting enough potassium in my diet - 1 capsule in the morning and 1 at night - can be reduced to 1 per day. I later found that several of my medications had potassium in them and I ended up with a higher level of potassium than was necessary. I no longer take it.

  I take 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, and 2 at bedtime. But that's only 18% of my daily requirement. I eat yougurt, bananas, reduced sugar OJ, reduced sodium V8, and fresh baby spinach for the majority of my requirement.

  I would like to add that all over-the-counter potassium is just 99 milligrams by law. This is why doctors tend to prescribe it for patients that need considerably more - so you don't have to take a lot of pills all day long. The doctors can also prescribe time-release potassium. However, as pointed out, prescriptions are expensive and often unnecessary when you can just buy the OTC version and take a few more pills. I have always found that time-release doesn't work very well anyway and spreading your potassium out throughout the day is the best way to take it to avoid gastric upset. Always take with food or a large glass of water unless instructed otherwise by your physician.

  My potassium levels were a little high so I now take only one 5mg of Potassium Citrate and 2 Magnesium Citrate tablets. I have had no stones since starting this regime. I wish they had just the citrate! Lemon juice is also a good source of citrate which is the magic ingredient against calcium deposits forming stones. Use dairy as a source of calcium---it does not form stones. Greens such as collards and mustards, calcium based antacids and calcium supplements can accumulate as kidney stones. if this has been a problem---make sure you know that calcium is the composition of your stones.

  Your physician is unlikely to have prescribed such a tiny amount as 5 mg of this mineral. More likely, it was 5 mEq of potassium. To get the equivalent in milligrams you will need to know exactly which potassium your doctor recommends as each potassium has a different molecular weight and to convert mEq to milligrams you need to know the weight. The internet tells me that 5 mEq's of potassium citrate =540 milligrams of potassium citrate. But if your doctor indicated potassium chloride then 5 mEq = 320 milligrams. I hope this helps.

  I am have a recurring kidney stone problem, so I can appreciate the question.I have not found that this has increased my formation of stones.The potassium Citrate I bought and pictured here is 99mg, so it would be more than the 5mg prescribed by this person's doctor.I am taking this, along with cranberry juice, daily,and I have had no stone problems for the past 16 years, which for me, is almost a miracle
